Fine Antique Persian and Oriental Rugs Q&A

Q. What is your family background in the rug business?

A. It has been part of our family to provide the finest rugs in the world for three generations. From going directly to source to hand select the rugs to the experience in importing such fine pieces, our family has the experience needed to deliver the best rugs to you.

With the amount of rugs that we import, the selection can be a daunting process. Therefore, we offer the assistance of our person rug consultant to guide you through the process of selecting the perfect rug for you.

I've been in the business since I was a child and that has been a blessing since each rug is like a piece of art. My family has locations throughout the US, Australia and Europe.

Q. Where do you go as direct importers to find the rugs?

A. With years of experience in the rug business, our buyers go directly to the source to buy the finest rugs. As third generation direct importers, we select the rugs with the highest quality and import them to the United States. We then make them available for you to enjoy.

Those locations where the direct importers select the rugs include Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Turkey and different place through out the world.

We don't sell just any rug. We sell the best hand-picked rugs.

Q. How do they select the Persian rugs?

A. Bella Rugs offers the finest quality Persian rugs and Oriental rugs. Our fine rugs are hand-selected at the source. Only the best are then offered to you. It also depends on the clients taste: New or Antique. Different colors and much depends on where the rugs are made. The actual weaving of the rugs is a tedious process. It can take from several months to o a few years to create, depending on the size and quality. As third-generation direct importers of fine rugs, we know what is important to look for.

Q. What do the rugs provide and how are the made?

A. Rugs provide warmth, insulation, safety, sound reduction and of course a great look. Most often these rugs are made out of wool. Silk is also used. These rugs date back over 400 years and tend to increase in value over time. Due to their rarity, they are often displayed on walls rather than used as floor coverings.

Q. Where does the wool come from for Persian rugs?

The location of the wool on the sheep is important. The finer wool of the sheep, which is typically the best for thee rugs comes from under the sheep's arm or by their stomach area and not on their back. Since those areas are not as exposed to the weather, it keeps the wool finer, instead of becoming course as happens on the sheep's back. Q. What are the unique qualities of Oriental rugs?

A. Oriental rugs have different qualities and typically have more floral design and the subsets are often based on the regions where they are made.

Q. What makes a Persian rug an antique Persian rug?

A. Antique rugs are usually 40 years and old. The wool can actually change color over the years and the become shiner over the years where the wool can become more vibrant over time. Of course, restoration is very important with these rugs.

Q. How do you Restore a Rug?

A. We can go to the client's house to pick up the rug and use antique wool to fix it and make it look like it is brand new.

Q. What should I look for when buying a Rug?

It is important to take time to find the right rug. They need to consider how it will be used and if it is going to be used in a room, they want to look at the right size. Also, the condition is important and they should inspect the side, the boarder, the back. Of course, price is an important factor as well. There is a lot that goes into that choice which is why our rug consultants help the buyers choose.

Q. What is a Karastan Rug?

A. Karastan is unique because they are machine made rugs that are still made with 100% wool so people like something with tightly woven and thin knots so when they do not want a hand-made rug, they often buy Karastan.

Karastan rugs are just some of the few decorative pieces that have successfully balanced modern needs with the aesthetic sense and beautiful craftsmanship of ancient weavers. This machine crafted furnishing offers the same beauty and warmth to that of oriental rugs, while fitting today's contemporary standards and lifestyle.

Q. What is a Gabbeh Rug?

Gabbeh rugs are village-type rugs made in the North part of Iran. They use a lot of vegetable dyes and vibrant earth tone colors. The Gabbeh is commonly seen among the Kurdish, Luri and Qashqai tribes of the Zagros mountains. It is one of the popular types of hand-woven Persian carpets that's made from wool and characterized by a mixture of different playful colors and geometric designs. Gabbeh rugs are often tinted with natural yellow and red plant dye. However, other solid shades are also used in these rugs and often, they are equally distributed in its body.
